MEMBERS OF CONGRESS MEET WITH DENTAL PUBLIC HEALTH RESIDENTS
San Antonio, TX: On Thursday, October 17th, 2019, Members of Congress met with dental public health residents as part of the Federal Service Internship hosted by The American Institute of Dental Public Health (AIDPH). Students met with members of federal health agencies including the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the Indian Health Services (IHS), the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). Following those meetings, the students joined members of Congress in Washington, D.C. to discuss public health policy.
Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE3) shared his work as Chair of the Rural Caucus and his perspective representing the most rural district in the nation. His strong support of rural health includes innovating health workforce to allow practicing at the highest appropriate level of scope. Congressman Smith shared his intent to support critical access hospitals in rural areas and expanding opportunities for integrated health care delivery.
Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL16) joined the congressional panel in strong support of military health. His public health leadership is recognized through recent legislative efforts to prevent and treat opioid abuse, a critical issue in both rural communities and within the military health system. Congressman Kinzinger closed the panel by addressing his support of critical access hospitals in rural communities and his recent letter to HHS Secretary Azar requesting solutions to the growing crisis.
